Housing Search Tips

The cost of rent, does not always include heat and hydro

When the ad or landlord states $800 inclusive - find out exactly what “inclusive” includes.  Some landlords cover heat and hydro only, where others may include something else as well.

Never assume!  Always ask questions!

Where to look for apartments or rooms for rent:

  1. Network – talk to friends, family, coworkers, and acquaintances…. Let them know you are apartment searching
  2. Local newspapers – check out the rooms for rent/apartments for rent section in the classifieds
  3. Go to social services agencies and resource centres – inquire within
  4. If your community has a Housing Help Centre or Housing Help Line–  call or stop by and find out how they can help
  5. Look in the yellow pages under apartments or property management companies
  6. Check out bulletin boards in colleges/universities
  7. Walk around different neighbourhoods you would like to live in and look for “apartment for rent” / “room for rent” signs
  8. Go to the local community centre, recreation centre, Laundromat, and grocery store and look at their bulletin board
